The ILO also estimates that 395 million workers worldwide have suffered non-fatal workplace accidents.
Nearly three million workers die each year from work-related accidents and illnesses, an increase of more than 5% compared to 2015, according to new ILO estimates.
This figure highlights ongoing challenges in protecting the health and safety of workers globally.
A majority of these work-related deaths, or 2.6 million victims, are due to occupational diseases. Work accidents account for 330,000 additional deaths, according to the analysis. Circulatory diseases, malignant neoplasms and respiratory diseases are among the three leading causes of work-related deaths.
Together, these three categories account for more than three-quarters of work-related mortality.
The new data, included in the ILO report, A Call for Safer and Healthier Working Environments, will be presented at the 23rd World Congress on Safety and Health at Work, one of the largest international conferences on this topic, taking place in Sydney, Australia, November 27-30.
